Chat in a cyber context refers to systems that allow people to communicate using text via the internet. Examples of chat applications include skype, whatsapp and wickr. Some chat applications also allow video and file sending as attachments, such as photos, videos and documents.
Some chat applications use encryption, which mean the chat conversations are less easily intercepted. It is important to patch, or keep up-to-date, chat application software to reduce its vulnerability to attack. It is also important to only connect or chat with people who are known to you. Phishing attacks and malicious attachments as well as grooming and fraud scams can also occur via chat.
