Like any server, a webserver is a gold mine for attackers. Webservers store and share web pages (and infections) over the internet.

If infected, a webserver can serve infections to vulnerable machines and devices over the internet in what is known as a driveby. If the IP range of the infection targets is limited or if the site is specific to a group, this is known as waterholing.
